You are indeed a busy man! Gotta admire you for that!

I couldn't determine if the original had wire, however I did wind fine silver wire over the body to make it more durable.
Of late I've been playing with my new Smhaen Dubbing Twister. It makes putting peacock herl, plus other materials in a dubbing loop super easy. Gives me some bomb proof herl bodies that look really full and smooth, better than I ever did by hand.

Ron, I've seen those. Cool it works good for you. Have one I made from coat hanger wire & that works okay for me.

Steve, did you post that yet? Always looking for homemade stuff that actually works. I used a semi-straight paperclip as a dubbing twister for years. Last class I taught I gave everyone a paperclip and a section of soda straw. Dubbing hook and hackle guard, free of charge.

Ron - I recently bought the same dubbing spinner, but have been having issues with thread breakage. The inside edges seem to be sharp and slices thru 70 denier thread like butter. I might need to sand the jaws a bit to round/dull the edges.

My favorite tools for forming reinforced herl bodies are a Wasatch Mitch’s Bobbin Whirler, or a Dr. Slick Turbo Dubbing hook. They both are excellent for making indestructible herl bodies, without the need for a wire rib.
