Red Fox Squirrel Nymph

Post by joaniebo » Fri Apr 29, 2022 12:10 pm

Recently, I was able to look at packages of the Dave Whitlock dubbings for his Red Fox Squirrel Nymph and was able to mix up various materials with red fox squirrel furs to match the color and, hopefully), the texture and gloss in the REAL dubbings.

Started tying a few and here's a (bad) pic of the first one I tied.

Dougsden is going to be excited to see this. RFSN are one of his favorites.

Nice job on the dubbing blend. Looks like you got the color perfect. ;)

Looks like a good pattern. I tie something similar, but I only have Gray and Pine Squirrel.

Yep it is that time of year here too... In Dave Hughes's book "Fishing the Four Seasons", he recommends swinging the red fox squirrel nymph with the arrival of the Western March Browns. We've been seeing the beginnings of the hatch out here, but just haven't been able to hit the river at the right time. So, instead I'm tying a few more of these babies with the materials gifted to me by Dougsden. My additions to the box in size 10 and 12.

Bob & Ron,
These RFSHN's look fantastic! Certainly worthy of fishes attention! Ray is right! Your mix is spot on! Have you had a chance to try them out and about? Dave's W.'s dubbing technique is unusual but extremely effective. I had trouble at first getting it right but after a couple dozen or so, it just works!
Guys, I am really impressed by what you have created! Please report back (with lots of pictures) on your first sucesses with these great Nymphs! Sorry so late in getting back with you guys!
Doug
Fish when you can, not when you should! Anything short of this is just a disaster.

Great job! This is one of my all time favorites flies. My box is full of them and many variants at all times. If you haven't, you guys should check out a similar pattern called the "flying squirrel nymph”. It's much the same, and I use Whitlock's "abdomen" color SLF mixed with squirrel guard hair, but it's hackled more in the Cal Bird/Bird's nest/thumb roll style. A true fish killer.
