Hare Brain Emerger
Hare Brain Emerger - a moist/dry soft hackle
Hook - Barbless Scud Hook (Size 10 or 12) - These hook came from FlyTyingYarn.com website. (make unknown)
Thread - UTC Ultra Thread (70 Denier/Woodduck Color)
Hackle - Quail Covert Feather (Natural Mottled Brown) - The quail wings were found in Cabelas hunting dog training section. Freeze dryed quill wings, to train hunting dogs. Sorry doggies, these became tying materials...
Wing (Sighter Post) - Snowshoe Rabbit Foot (Light Dun)
Thorax - Four Strands of Peacock Herl (Natural)
Tag/Rib - UTC Ultra Wire (Small/Gold)
Rear Body - Turkey Feather Herl (Mottled Brown)
Note - Materials are tyed onto the hook in this order.
Photo of Tying Sequence - Step One (lash everything to the hook)
Step Two - Wrap turkey herl forward, forming the rear body. Then wrap two touching turns with the wire rib (forming tag), then wrap in open spiral wraps forward (segmenting the body and reinforcing the turkey herl). Make sure your tying thread is waiting slightly forward of mid-shank.
Step Three - Wrap peacock herl rearwards towards the middle of the hook shank. Secure with two firm wraps of tying thread, then wrap thread forward in open spiral turns (reinforces peacock herl fibers).
Small detail - I use magnets on the screw of my vice to hold my scissors. They also come in handy for holding the bobbin out of the way, when wrapping the hackle.
Step Four - Wrap Hackle in Front of Hare WIng, then form neat head with whip finish. Add a drop of clear nail polish to finish the fly (SHHAN).
Showing how the fly will ride in the water (suspended in the surface film, by the snowshoe rabbit wing.
Photo of several Hair Brain Emergers, with quail wing.
This fly is designed to hang in the surface film. Grease the snowshoe rabbit wing with floatant, but not the rest of the body or hackle. The fly should hang in the surface film, imitating an emerging insect.

Wow, what a great fly. I will have a few in my box whenever the creeks get to a reasonable flow.

I'll bet that would work during a hendrickson hatch.
I'd be more than happy to test drive one on the Delaware for you.

Re: Hare Brain Emerger
Very nice, Ray. That dog will hunt! I need to have a few of those in my box before I hit the river next week.
Interesting that you got the wing from dog training supplies at Cabela's. I looked, but they don't have them anymore. I have been getting some wings from Gun Dog Supply. Nice wings at a very reasonable price.
I had to order some Wood Duck thread, I love that color.

Re: Hare Brain Emerger
Ray... I'm going to steal parts of this fly and one of Ohlie's flies "the c midge" and come up with a variant.
I'm using Ohlie's body of a herl imbedded in resin with the white nano silk colored with a marker; and will use your peacock thorax and wing.... It will be closer to your fly with Ohlie's body...
As soon as I tie one that is decent, I'll post my variant.
We take our inspiration anywhere we can Here's a shot of Ohlie's style body

Ron - Please post pictures of your finished flies and provide updates when you get a chance to fish it. I love this kind of adaptation.
