Straight eyed hooks
For quite a while now, I have preferred to tie my Spiders and Flymphs on s/e hooks. I know some others do as well. Any opinions on this, pro or con, or indifferent?

Re: Straight eyed hooks
Donald,
As you may have noticed, my spiders are tied on Daiichi 1640 hooks. You and Mike Conner are responsible for me starting to use those hooks. A spider just looks right on that 2X short shank. After fishing them, the wide gap and slight offset of the hook point really gets solid hook ups. I have never (knock on wood) lost a fish while using a 1640.
For flymphs, I prefer the up turned eye of the Mustad 94842. Don't ask me why, maybe it just looks right to me.

Re: Straight eyed hooks
Ron,
For what it is worth, so did Pete Hidy.
Don,
I like the look of the spiders on straight eye hooks. They look very traditional, and I know Roger Fogg shows his North Country flies tied on straight eye hooks. At the very least, I think the shank on a spider looks more appropriate if it is shorter than normal. Just my opinion.

SPEAKING OF THE #94842'S,
DOES ANYONE KNOW OF A BRAND OTHER THAN MUSTAD THAT LOOKS LIKE THE FAMOUS
#94842? I THINK THAT BIG JIM L. AND PETE HIDY WOULD BE PLEASED WITH TODAYS HIGH QUALITY IRONS (WITH ALL THE DIFF. SHAPES AND WIRE DIAMETERS AND SUCH) AND CHEMICALLY SHARPENED POINTS. I KNOW THAT MUSTADS QUALITY HAS COME UP IN THE LAST SEVERAL YEARS AND I'M GLAD FOR THAT. I WAS JUST CURIOUS IF ANYONE HAS RUN ONTO THAT FAMOUS UP EYED HOOK IN ANYTHING OTHER THAN MUSTAD BRAND?

Re: Straight eyed hooks
I just saw a fly, recently that someone posted, somewhere in this forum with an up eye hook that was not a Mustad, but I don't remember where it was.

Re: Straight eyed hooks
I believe Mustad is changing the 94842 to the Signature series. That means a better wire, sharper hooks and proportional sizing. Don't know if thats a good thing or not.

Re: Straight eyed hooks
THANKS FELLOWS! AFTER I POSTED THIS REQUEST, I REMEMBERED THAT ALOT OF ENGLISH DRYFLY HOOKS ARE "UP EYE". I'LL LOOK INTO THEM AND AGAIN, MANY THANKS!
I LIKE WHAT PETE HIDY SAID ABOUT TYING FLYMPHS ON MUSTAD # 94842'S. SOMETHING LIKE (I'M NOT SURE OF THE EXACT QUOTE) "JUST BECAUSE THEY LOOK RIGHT". I KNOW WHAT HE MEANT BY THAT. I HAVE HOOKS BRANDS AND WITHIN THOSE BRANDS CERTAIN STYLES THAT I LIKE TO TIE CERTAIN PATTERNS TO. WE ALL SHARE THE SAME FEELINGS TOWARD A CERTAIN HOOK STYLE (OR NUMBER) THAT ACCENTUATES THAT PATTERN.
SINCE JOINING THIS FORUM, I AM AMAZED AT ALL THE NEAT HOOK BRANDS AND STYLES THAT MAKE ALL OF YOUR PATTERNS COME ALIVE OR GIVE THEM A GREAT LOOK. WITHOUT THE INTERNET AND THIS FORUM, IT WOULD TAKE US YEARS TO LEARN ABOUT SUCH THINGS. AND, GOD BLESS THOSE WHO TIE WELL AND PHOTOGRAPH EVEN BETTER! I REALLY APPRECIATE THE CLEAR AND VIVID PIC'S OF ALL THE PATTERNS LISTED ON THIS FORUM. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK GUYS AND THANK YOU FOR SHARING YOUR KNOWLEDGE AND TALENTS WITH ALL OF US....AROUND THE WORLD!

Re: Straight eyed hooks
I bought some Kamasan UEH. the no. is B440 and I ordered them from www.pechetruite.com. They had the best price and shipping rates.

Re: Straight eyed hooks
I tie my spiders on straight Eye hooks, mostly the Drennan super specialist 10 or 12, sometimes 16. If I think I can better use a light hook I will use the TMC 101 also with a straight eye. For a beaded wingless wet I prefer a Kamasan 110 no 12. Sometimes I use a Hayabusha 390. Most of my flies I tie now on straight eye hooks, because I think i can make a neater head. Roger Fogg and David Westwood have convinced me to use straight eye hooks.
There will allways be a solution.
