Swedish pink

Post by Anfield » Sun Nov 28, 2010 9:13 am

Last September we were fishing in Sweden in the Vindelälv river.
And with this fly we caught most of the grayling. It was a beautiful autmun week with a lot of sunshine and lovely temperature.
Good company and and good fishing.

The pattern is simple.
Hook: #10 (or #8)
Body: black punchwool
Hackle: black hen
Tail: pink yarn, floss, wool or what ever
Black and pink do the trick.

What a perfect fly! Reminds me of when I started tying. My first lesson was woolly buggers and woolly worms. When I went home I had to modify the woolly bugger a little (wasn't satisfied with status quo even then). Anyway basically they were small white or black woolly buggers with a pink marabou tail. When I took them back to show my teacher my homework he laughed and said "Of course, you ARE a GIRL" Well, we took them opening weekend for brook trout. One white with pink, one black with pink each. The fishing was pretty slow until we put on the white and pink then WOW! We were having a great time, my husband on one side of the river, me on the other until I snagged and lost my fly. I tried the black and pink, no luck. I tried an all white, no luck. My sweet husband saw me not having a good time and waded way down stream so not to scare the fish and waded across just to give me his fly. Not an easy wade, the Saugeen River in spring spate just below a dam that had been opened to let out some of the run-off. Anyway the white and pink was the fly of the weekend.

Looks like a similar experience for you Anfield. What a pretty fish. I hope to fish for grayling one day.

From Amsterdam to the place where we caught those beautiful grayling, it was 4 hours flying and 11/2 by car.
So it's not my backyard, sadly enough.
Overhere it's rudd, ide, pike and bass, but no salmonids.
Be sure, you have a lot more salmon and troutwaters then in Western
Europe.
