Green Drake flymph

Post by Roadkill » Sun Jun 13, 2021 10:37 pm

This is a quick tying job based on the local shop latest fishing report for the Metolius while waiting for my fishing partner to roll out of bed on Friday...

Hook-Dai Riki 280 #8 with black bead head
Thread-UTC 70 Light Olive
Tail and Hackle-Pheasant Greenish Church Window feather
Rib-Silver wire
Body-Spectral dubbing blend (Acrylic rug yarn in Med Green, Light Avocado, & Rust blended with Dark Brown Hare-Tron)

;) Only saw one Drake in the air during 6 hours of fishing but scored an a few MD Caddis dries and a Sparkle Dun BWO!

That’s a hatch I’d like to see/experience some day. They’re supposed to be a large insect.

Nice pattern Bill. ;)

I was gifted a couple of these babies last week with a promise of giving them a try on the green drake hatch on the Metolius. Well, the green drakes weren't in evidence, but another mayfly hatch was in full bloom this morning. Bill's flymph produced four trout including one from out of a deep undercut bank... I would have loved to have a pic, as it was a very nice fish.... but the dummy lost the fish at the net. More importantly, Bill this one was a winner and thanks for the flies... by the way... I need to tie a few more as I lost one to a log..
Only problem is I don't have the feather or the spectral yarn blend for the body....so I'll have to improvise..

I think I have all the materials here at home I'll tie up a few more and deliver them and some dubbing after the 4th.

What was the hatch?

They are good size. Males are a 12 and females will go to a size 10. I have them all over my house right now as they are hatching now on the stream across the street.

Here are a couple of spinners

So I improvised.. with Bill's guidance I whipped up a version of Bill's spectra drake blend and took a few liberties to come up with this variant. In Arlen Thomason's "Bugwater" he shows a photo of a lesser green drake dun "flav" that has dark reddish black eyes. So I used a 2.9mm ruby bead, on a size 10 TMC 5212. Added a silver UNI-French oval tinsel rib and a pheasant feather for the hackle. Tail was wood duck flank.

Sorry...hogging the post.. but I liked the second variant better.... copper Krystal Flash rib and CDL tail... better taper on the body and less dubbing behind the bead...
