"In Ross Mueller's book "Flies That Catch Trout", on page #39 Ross describes the Pass Lake Wet Fly. He noted that Stubenvoll tied the calf tail wing IN FRONT of the hackle. While Earl Paape favored the calf tail wing BEHIND the hackle (trude style)."

seems like for every "pass lake" out there there's a pattern that bears its name

Man, those are some sharply dressed flies; beautifully tied. I ran into an ancient fisherman on Millinocket Stream many years back who was using this pattern; said he didn't carry much else. He gave me one, and I immediately came home and tied up half a dozen. The old dude was right, they work.

I think I prefer the calf wing behind the hackle, but that's probably just because I'm used to it tied that way.

I used to tie it with a peacock herl body. Great fly. My two streamers are the Muddler and a Pass lake.

To me, peacock herl with white wing and brown hackle is a Coachman wet fly.

Yeah. Very close. But it's on a streamer hook, and the calf hair is long and more sizable. There's also a Pass Lake dry fly, which is basically a trude.

Pass Lake

Category - Winged Wet Fly

Hook - Standard wet fly style, size 4-8
Thread - Black
Tail - Yellow hackle fibers
Ribbing - 4 turns of flat silver tinsel
Body - Hot orange floss
Hackle - Yellow, tied wet style, 5 turns
Wing - White marabou

Used at Pass Lake, Washington, a fly only lake, good thru the first and last parts of the season. Height of summer no good due to bloom. Good for cutthroats.

I was thinking that might be a great Brookie fly in both lakes and streams.

Exactly. Those colors, tied onto a streamer hook, perhaps a tandem, will do yeoman work on St. Froid this spring. Striking fly...
