Eurasian Collared Dove (Dotterel Substitute)

Post by Updtate » Sat Jan 16, 2021 2:19 pm

A new acquisition I received today a pair of Eaurasian collared Dove wings. I had read that these wings provide a suitable substitute for Dotterel. I do happen to have a few Dotterel feathers provided to me by a good friend. I compared and indeed they are a very close match up. Some Dotterel flies to follow.

never thought of that. We have bunches of eurasian doves out here. Season for them is 24/7. I normally only shoot them during the mourning dove season.

Tom - Thank you for making this post. The coloration of the feathers look very useful, for a range of patterns. Nice to hear of a good Dotterel sub.

I look forward to seeing the flies you create with these feathers.

Here in Oregon the season is open all year long. The Eurasian Collared Dove is a little bit bigger than a morning Dove. Tom is on the money ,the feathers are very close to use for Dotterel substitute. I have been using the feathers for many patterns .

It just dawned on me what doves those are. They are the ones that make that annoying call, that sounds like a Covid infected crow!!!

DUBBN, yup, nothing compared to the sweet sound of a Mourning Dove. I have heard they are slightly tastier than the Mourning Dove and much larger. This thing about them being a good Dotterel sub is a bonus.

And they were cheap! 2.50 a pair on eBay!

I’m interested to hear your opinion about the secondary quills if you use them on winged wets.

Is the underside of the wings the same color?

Ray I have not tried tying with the secondary quills yet but they appear to be fine. In between mallard and Starling!

The underwing for the most part is a light ash colour similar to Pearsalls gossamer ash.
