Re: Master and pupil (John Shaner's Nail Knot Tutorial)
Thanks for pulling this out of the archives and assisting my foray into leader construction. etc.
I have the Maxima materials that I lacked on order and will be diving in soon. John's method of creating the nail knot is not as difficult as it at first seemed. I found an interesting suggestion for creating a semi-permanent connection for the fly line/ leader joint. After creating the connection with the butt material, tie a tippet ring to a 6-8 inch section of the butt. Then use that tippet ring to connect your leaders with a simple clinch knot. This seems to accomplish two things. A: you get the benefit of having the smooth and strong connection to the fly line B:you don't have to redo the nail knot any time you want to connect a new leader. I've found there is no problem connecting 20# maxima to the tippet ring and seems to make no difference in casting the leader with that short piece of butt material and tippet ring added to the leader. Comments Please?
