Wondering how many flymphers fish bamboo rods?
Ahhh yes ... the slippery slope. I fish bamboo rods pretty much exclusively these days and own a handful that fit both my cast and my preferences of "feel". Two weeks ago, fishing with the Forum Ghillie on Soda Butte Creek in Yellowstone...
An 8' 5wt rod built in the 1980s by Coloradan Charlie Jenkins:
That's a size #18 PMD Sparkle Dun stuck in the upper lip of this very nice cutthroat:
The Forum Ghillie releasing a cutthroat of (inaudible mumble) inches:
The Forum Ghillie is truly a remarkable angler. That inauspicious run along the far bank came alive with rising trout about two hours after the ghillie released his trout. Gray Drakes and PMDs hatched in abundance. How did the ghillie approach this pinch-me-I-can't-believe-this-is-true situation? He packed up his rod and walked away, because he "had to be somewhere". Big fish rising in a feeding frenzy, over 1,000 miles from home, and he had to be somewhere! Somewhere more important than rising trout??? I said, "John, snap out of it! Those are big fish rising!" But, the man has determination and will power. I can only imagine how fabulous that next appointment must have been. What a guy! I stepped into the ghillie's spot and caught fish after fish for the following hour or two.
