Dog Days

Post by DUBBN » Tue Jul 28, 2020 12:39 pm

The Dog days of Summer have arrived. At least, for me they have. Tricos, and Caddis usually save my day.

I have a Coq De Leon hen cape. I love looking at the large breast feathers. They are mottled to perfection. The one pain in the back side is, to tie traditionally, they would be appropriate for a size 2/0 Soft Hackle. I use a technique shown to me by Colorado fly tier Charlie Craven to use these large feathers to tie down to size 20. The draw back is, for me , the heads are a tad ugly.

These flies have a tail of CDL Rooster, and a Collar of CDL hen. They are size 16 and dubbed in Muskrat from the darkest fur of the pelt.

Swinging soft hackles during the Dog Days is a treat. After all that has been written in books, and on the internet, it amazes me at how few fly fishermen implement this way of fishing.

I do not know what was biting harder today. The little Native Cutthroats or the Mosquitos.

Honestly, I bet they would have eaten a bare hook. The Native Cutts, and the Mosquitos.

Wayne - Thank you for taking us along (mosquito-free). Those trout are so pretty. I’m jealous, but enjoying every photo. What a lovely stream.

BTW, I really like the look of the longer heads on those flies. I am reminded of Polly Rosborough’s Fuzzy nymphs. A personal favorite.

I've never been completely sold on tiny heads. As practical fishing goes anyway. The small heads look nice to the tier but I believe the larger heads could be an attractive feature to the profile of wet flies. Either way you could add a bit of dubbing to cover.
I hate it when I think I'm buying organic vegetables, and when I get home I discover they are just regular donuts.
