Slattery's Triple Threat

Post by ronr » Mon Jun 08, 2020 6:23 pm

One of the highlights of my trip to Montana last summer was attending a tying session at Jim's place with Narcodog and Oldhat. I was a bit handicapped at that session as I was awaiting shoulder surgery and couldn't really manage to tie a fly. So ever since, I been trying to tie a decent Triple Threat. With apologies to Jim, I think this is at least a fishing specimen with help from Han's great video. I hope I get back this year to see it done by the creator once again.

Perfection!

That is how my hair currently looks. It’s grown wild, since the COVID restrictions. Last time my hair was this long, I was in college. :D

ronr, back when I spent a summer working in Jim's shop, I tied many of these for the shop, under Jim's tutelage. Yours is one of the better one's I've seen. Well done!

I've been tying and fishing that pattern for a long time now. I never knew the name or the tier who came up with it until this thread, so thank you. It's a wonderful pattern on the Fish river, sizes #14-#16 in a chestnut-y brown with a lighter hackle.

...I wish mine looked as nice.

I tie it in olive and tan (with orange thread on the tan) in sizes 10, 12 and 14. My box is heavier on the 12 and 14. I know a couple guys who tie it on a 16, using gold wire instead of tinsel, but I've never gone that small.
