Post by fly_fischa » Thu Apr 09, 2020 6:55 am

Decided to tie a few cased caddis flies and a horned caddis today, interesting creatures and a fun challenge to tie.
Here are two stick caddis I tied;

You're too kind my friend :)
Your ties are first rate Ray, I don't think you need to learn anything to tie flies like these. You already do and can 8-)

;)

How did you form the body on the first fly? Did you trim the hackle first, or after wrapping it over the body?

Ironic, I am on the river right now. A stomach sample showed a couple Cased caddis. My patterns are not in your league, but if successful, I will post a pic when i get home.

That’s cool Wayne, I look forward to seeing the photos too, K
Ray the first fly is tied similar to a traditional woolly bugger, hackle tied in at the thorax palmered to the rear of the hook then caught/secured with one wrap of wire which is spiraled through to the thorax. I make sure the hackle barbs are Pointing forwards tho, underside facing the eye and shiny side the rear because I want the barbs to stand as upright as poss when trimmed. I used a whitings
American rooster hen saddle nice and soft.

The second fly was dubbing and one side of a grizzly hackle spun in a dubbing loop
