Carey Special

Post by Johnno » Sun Apr 05, 2020 2:16 pm

Thanks to Ray’s recent posts I was reminded of the Carey Special and was inspired to tie a few. It’s been a while.
Back in the 1990s when living in the North Island of NZ I would fish the Taupo region a lot and the Carey Special was a bit of a go-to for me on one lake in particular ...
It was called the Monkey Face Louise originally..... and was tied with a body of ground hog hair. I’ve gone with my favourite being peacock herl ribbed with gold.. also I used to tie it a lot with a Body of mottled green - grey - brown mohair..

John - What make/size hook is this tyed on? Looks to be a size 6, 3X long shank. Is that about right?

Love the peacock herl body. The mottled mohair version sounds interesting too. I’ll give them both a try this week. ;)

Did you ever try a version with pukeko, instead of pheasant rump?

“Monkey Face Louise”... what a name for a fly. :lol:

Howdy All;

Had a girlfriend that would qualify as a “Monkey Face Louise”
Luckily, I got sober later the next day.

Yeh I have used Pukeko. The “ Kiwi Carey”. I’ll post a pic at some point.
The hook is a extra long Kamasan, can’t recall the code and to find out would mean climbing Back up the stairs. It’s not even 0700 here so it’ll have to wait! :lol:
