Wash Your Hare! (preparing hare mask)
I recently purchased a new picric dyed hare mask from Jim Slattery. I wanted to show a few photos of how I prepare new hare masks (washing a dry flat mask will allow you to reshape the ears and face, making them easier to work with).
STEP ONE:
- Wash the hare mask under warm running water. As the hide soaks up water, it will become pliable, allowing you to open up the ears and reshape the mask.
STEP TWO:
- Squeeze out the excess water, then lay the mask flat on a double layer cotton towel. Fold the towel over the top and press out any remaining excess water.
STEP THREE:
- Open up the ears, an fold them down. Brush the fur on the backs of the ears, brushing them against the natural direction of the fur. This will make the short hairs stand out, way from the ear, make it easier to grasp.
STEP FOUR:
- Blow dry the mask, with a hair drier. Periodically brush the mask with a fine bristled hair brush, so until the fur and hide are completely dry.

I was right there until step 4.
My wife put the Kabush on me for using her hair drier to fluff up fur on dead critters.

I usually dress my hare's masks around a tennis ball before drying them. They need more room for storage afterwards but are easier to work with. (Yes, I remove the tennis ball when the mask is dry).

I love your tutorial, Ray, I do, ...but all I could picture while reading through it was Frank, the apocalyptic rabbit from the movie 'Donnie Darko' getting a makeover.
