After a little time on the Yellowstone River my Buffalo Ford Soft Hackle...

Now that Buffalo Ford has been renamed to Nez Perce Ford, I hope you're not planning on changing the source of the dubbing.

No Bob there was dubbing lying around all over the ground nearby.

Definitely an attractor but I would say both.

i was thinking of the success I have had with my Lightning Bug soft hackle and other flies with tinsel bodies. Blue is a color that stays fairly true at distance and depth. I will also tie this in a light sky blue when I get the tinsel. Blue has been a successful color for winter fishing. Tinsels of all colors are commonly used in big Rainbow trout fishing (Steelhead).

Approximation? Ignore the blue tinsel, the body shape, size and action of the hackle compare with many Soft Hackles. Back lit by daylight to a fish underneath it it probably just looks like a dark bug. Presentation is more of the game than the fly selection. As I learned years ago it is easier to fish the wrong fly the right way and catch fish than fishing the right fly the wrong way. ;)
