Spiders from Mars

Post by letumgo » Mon Jan 11, 2016 8:36 pm

In fond memory of David Bowie. After hearing news, that David Bowie had passed away, I felt inspired to tie up some "spiders from Mars" this evening. Just a wild mix of colors, inspired by some of the wild outfits Mr. Bowie wore in his early glam rock days. I remember watching David Bowie in 1979, when he was the musical guest on Saturday Night Live. Crazy outfits!

These spiders are tyed on Mustad 3906B/Size 14 hooks. I like the longer shank for spider bodies. The hackle is a mix of Silver Badger, Starling, and Hen Saddle dyed lime green. Tied with embroidery thread in hot pink, canary yellow, neon green, and electric purple. The thorax are formed with synthetic Ice Dubbing, of colors to suit the body.

Just a fun way to say goodbye to a cherished artist and entertainer. Rest in Peace, Major Tom. I, for one, will miss you...

Ray, the spiders from Mars is a nice way to reflect on a brilliant musician and a sad loss. Such a nice idea, and an apt combination of materials for a glam rock series. If I get to it I might have to devise a Ziggy Stardust Flymph. (copyright 2016, William Anderson!! :D It's not yet conceived, or is it? legally speaking.)

I've thought quite a bit about Bowie the past couple days and I have to admit I wasn't heavily impacted by his music directly, but as a musical/social powerhouse, the bands he shepherded and influenced are more the bedrock of my early musical foundation. Velvet Underground, The Smiths, U2, Stone Roses, The Church, Chameleons . What a remarkable artist.
