Ran across this one while looking for some info on the Kite dry fly. Pretty cool looking Welsh pattern; Hans has a great video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rtcAg_TyiCE

hook - Mustad 94840 #12
thread - MFC 6/0 purple
tag - tying thread
tail - bronze mallard
rib - x-small wire gold
body - bronze mallard
hackle - hen dun (original calls for Andalusian dun, of which I definitely have none)

Scott

Nice.

That Andalusian dun may be a bit hard to find. I think I have a viable recipe for dying if you'd be interested in it.

Thanks; I'd love to see it.

The more I looked at the first try, the more it seemed a bit "stalky"; switched to a different hook (Mustad 3399A) and proportions look better to me.

ScottP, Howdy;

I don't see anything wrong with either one ... wither you're catching fish or fisherfolk
both will do an excellent job ;) .

Scott, I agree, I was smitten with the material combination on the first effort and the tying, but the second try really looks like a killer. I love this fly. As I try to narrow what I carry, I still seem to want more options. After last season, I swear I could carry only about 7 flies and be very happy, but the reality points towards hundreds. But I'm trying. This is one to try this season.

This pattern has really caught my attention and I am anxious to give it a swing come sping. I have come across another version of the Usk Naylor/Nailer which appears to be tied for a decidedly different use than swinging downstream. I thought some would enjoy the link. Not to worry, Hank - nothing to spend your money on here! 8-)
Cheers,
Jim
