Was tying Waterhen and Turkey patterns and ran out of suitable waterhen feathers, so I started rummaging for alternate soft hackles. An old Red Grouse skin produced this fly, tied on a #14 Daiichi 1550 with Pearsall's #3 Primrose silk.

Great combo should work for many swimming nymphs.

Bill - Are you targeting a particular insect with these? Wonderful patterns, btw.

No, Ray. William reports that Waterhen and Turkey catches whenever, so perhaps one of these will also. I particularly like the looks of the woodcock and turkey herl for a buggy generic.

Both are just lovely wee flies. They should do well. Well dressed also.

Bill,
This one, as with all of your goodies, is just phenominal! The red grouse is a latent beauty (we are glad you found it in your stash) and compliments the turkey really well! I usually start the season (just after ice out) with patterns such as, but not near as nice as, yours! And, I try to end the season with them as well! I really like this one and I can only imagine it in trout waters across this land!
You are a power tyer Bill!!
Doug

Great looking pair, eloquent in their making.
Look like the fly one might choose after opening the flybox after fishing several hours and having been skunked- what next........ ah, the Red Grouse & Turkey.

Man, these are pretty. Lively, textured and rich looking. I think Eric has caught more on the waterhen/turkey spider fly this season than I have. But I'll claim a dozen at different points in the season, one weekend when I needed a miracle it did the trick. These are tough to beat. Nicely done.
