Widow Maker
Hook - Mustad SL73UBLN-36890 (Size 8)
Abdomen - UNI-Stretch (White) -
Coloration of Abdomen - Black and Red Sharpie Marker
Three Layers of Coating - Clear Cure Goo (Hydro) - Cured with a UV lamp
Recolor the red section between each layer of CCG. It adds a beautiful rich depth to the color.
Thread - 8/0 UNI-Thread (Black)
Thorax - Two Strands of Peacock Herl (Natural)
Hackle - Nice Webby Hoffman Hen Neck Feather (Black)
A full hackle is wrapped backwards thru the thorax. Then the hackle fibers on top and bottom are trimmed flush with the body. This allows the remaining hackle fibers to splay out to either side, like spider legs.

Interesting pattern Ray, one I can see having a place in a Halloween swap.
How does it swim? Does the trimmed hackle negate the weight of the gel abdomen- or does it sink butt first?

I imagine, like me, it will sink butt first.
This was an experimental pattern. I liked the idea of a plump spider body, but I am not sure how well it will fish. I'll throw it in my fly box and give it a swim. I'll let you know how it works.

Steve,
I think I should trim off the hook and use this to scare my wife.
Then again, I better not. It might be the last prank I play. She does not react well to spiders.

Nice fly and special way to "TIE" a fly. My wife also does not react well to spiders. Some people call me the Spiderman. Yesterday there was quite a big one in the bathroom: she yelled and I had to make it dead.

Ruard - That seems to be my wife's main reason for keeping me around all these years. I'm her bug hunter and destroyer. The secret to a happy marriage...
That, and the occasional prank...

Ray, you never cease to amaze. That is creepy. Are these your swap flies? I'd love to see one.

That is amazing, Ray -- highly creative and skillfully tied. I will be really interested in how this works, especially if you get a chance to try it on trout, as your warmwater fishies may have different tastes.
