Well I got the rabbit's feet, thanks to a buddy of mine, now I just need to find out how to dye them a dun color. Has anyone got a sure fire way of doing this?
We are turning the meat into pies along with deer, pheasant, moose, veggies and some gravy. Darn, now I made myself hungry...lol.

Tim ~ If you have access to a crafts store such as Joanne's Fabrics or something similar, you should be able to find their Rit dye display. The colors shown on the packages are pretty much what you will get, so find one that looks like what you're after. If there is no single color that matches your desired hue, get two that will combine to give you color of choice. "Dun" is a pretty broad term, but most often it is considered to be a brownish grey, so perhaps those two colors could be combined to do the job. Experiment with ratios in small test batches to get the color you want. Then follow the instructions that come with the dye.

The color I am looking for is a medium to dark dun which is more a darkish gray/blue, Bill. Hopefully, I won't have to mix any colors...lol. Thank you.

Checkout the Rit website and look at their color library. Lots of examples with the recipes for each color.
Reminder, natural hair and feathers will dye a bit differently than fabric ( often taking the dye less readily). Varying the temperature of the dye bath and the length of time the product is in the bath will give you different tones. Keep notes on every dunk.

You may have to de-grease the fur before dyeing to get the color to take evenly. A great reference is A. K. Best's Dyeing and Bleaching Natural Fly-Tying Materials.

Ditto on Rit. Mixing the different colors and testing is more interesting than you might think. =) Good call on the degreasing.

KOOLAID!

It's pretty kool, actually.
OK. I'll quit now.
Mostly the trick is finding the colors/flavors you want. Don't forget to get a bottle of Vinegar to use as a mordant.
And no metal pans. Metal can affect the color. Somehow.
Have fun!
