Even since I saw Eric's post "Alpaca!" the other day, I've had a nagging feeling that some of this material was lurking somewhere in my stash. After rummaging around a bit, I found a small plastic envelope with the following printed on it: ALPACA Wool ... NZ ... Mm. Inside was this beautiful, soft milk chocolate colored wool that I am pretty sure came to me via the generosity of William A. and originating with Jeff Smith (Matura mayfly) in New Zealand. Here is what I made with it:
Hook: Mustad 94852, Size #12
Thread: Pearsall's Gossamer #19 Hot Orange
Hackle: Brown partridge
Tail: Brown Partridge
Rib: Gold braided tinsel
Body: Alpaca wool spun on Clark block

Not bad, not bad at all.
Pretty bloody exceptional really!
And a much better use of the Alpaca material than I have managed to rough out.
Bill, the material you have, is quite long in the fibre. Did you chop it into shorter lengths and blend before introducing it to the thread on the block, or just pinch out a bit- tease it out and spin it on?

I thought Alpaca fur was brown in color, did you dye it or does the fur come in different shades? That would make for a real buggy look if you used mohair with it which is what I was thinking of doing. I tie so slow you could use a sun dial to time me...lol.

raven4ns, Howdy;
There were several Llama and Alpaca ranches near where I lived in Utah.
They both come in a multitude a colors.
