Black Gnat (thorax hackle)

Another couple shots of the Black Gnats, one tying in the starling hackle at mid-shank, then tying in the crow herl and claret silk at the bend before winding it forward. For the thorax wrap the body (silk and herl twisted) was wound forward to the hackle, the hackle was wrapped toward the eye in open turns around the shank and tied off, then the body twist was brought forward through the hackle and to the eye. This little step probably won't make any difference in how the pattern fishes, but it occurred to me to try it so I'll have to drown a few of these asap.

Black Gnat - nearly the traditional Leisenring recipe, except tied with 8/0 black tying thread.

Extra nice William.
I particularly like the first pattern.
How will you fish them?

I really like the effect produced by twisting the silk and herl together, w. Both of these should work well, especially as low water flies should that condition ever show up again ;) .

dub-ya, Howdy;

Liking the top fly, don't know why, just appeals to my idea
of what may attract the fishes.
Lookin' forward to a report of how these work for you.

Great flies William. Classic, beautifully tied. These are what my Dad liked to fish as droppers while leading with bigger flymphs.
Are these size 16 hooks?

Really nice flies Will. Tricos are in full swing here in central pa. I'd be willing to bet that your thorax hackled fly would reign supreme in a sz. 20.

Maybe I'm just used to thorax hackle, but the first one does look a lot "buggier" to me. I like it!
