Some years ago, after looking at some Irish wetflies, I thought the style might lend itself well to my old freestone favorite, the dark olive & brown Wooly Worm. And it did. This one covers a lot of the larger nymphs found in freestone streams -- drakes, stoneflies, dragonflies, sculpin.
Re: Woodcutter
I can see why you use it as a Stone nymph. As soon as I saw it, it reminded me of one of my favorites the Halfback. Great looking pattern.

It should be a great lake troll as well!
Re: Woodcutter
Yes it is. Workhorse pattern. If I could only have 3, the Woodcutter would be one of them.Roadkill wrote:It should be a great lake troll as well!

Re: Woodcutter
And the other two would be? By the way, what is a Welsummer hen?

Wow. My mind spaghettied. Can I have 5 more choices?letumgo wrote:And the other two would be? By the way, what is a Welsummer hen?
Welsummers are native to Holland, though fairly common here. They are multi-colored, with speckled brown similar to brown partridge, also solid gingers, browns & bronze, & beautiful gold-tipped/speckled-brown neck hackles. The body feathers are rounded, webby & soft.

Re: Woodcutter
After a quick GOOGLE it was stated on one site that the Kelloggs Corn Flake rooster is a Welsummer as well. The things you learn that may one day help us win a game of Trivial Pursuit.
Great choice of hackle Steve.
