Be sure to check out the video at the bottom. An excellent tutorial, showing how to tye the flies in-hand, in a traditional manner. I was especially interested in the method of creating the horsehair leader. Neat stuff.

Yeah- nah....... I can make a big enough mess using a vice...... in the hand tying is a long way off and hopefully my eyes will be shot by then!
Does show great talent though and the furled horsehair was neat to see being done. There are a few horses around this neck of the woods, does the hair "have" to be white?

Jeff the best hair comes from a white stallion. Their tail hair is stronger and is not urine burned which weakens the hair.Mataura mayfly wrote:Yeah- nah....... I can make a big enough mess using a vice...... in the hand tying is a long way off and hopefully my eyes will be shot by then!

Watching this makes the delicacy and neatness of the little flies we saw at John Shaner's house even more impressive. Those gentlemen were really skilled.

I could never tie like that. For one thing, I don't have enough patience to do it that way. That guy has some mad skills alright.

I watched the video and was wondering how he would wrap the hackle. Pliers!
I have posted about a lady here in Sweden who tied trout and grayling flies in the hand commercially for more than six decades from the mid thirties. She told a journalist that she tied a thousand dozens a year. When she died some ten years ago there was an order for more materials in an envelope on her kitchen table.
Incredible!

dd, Howdy;
Let us see ...
12,000 / 365 = 32.876 flies per day ...
Hate to have her pinch my cheek like
most Aunties and Grannies do.
