In the hope that Tom Ames, Jr's observation about numerous small versions of the Giant Golden Stonefly nymph crawling around on the bottoms of New England streams also holds true for Catskill waters, I've been trying to come up with a flymph style pattern to prospect for them. With apologies to Charlie Brooks and Lance Hidy, here is one tied on a Daiichi 1260 hook, Size #14. Even substituting individual plover hackles for palmered saddle hackles, this is a lot of stuff to put on a hook of that size, and may help explain the popularity of wingcase style patterns.

Hook: Daiichi 1260, Size #14
Thread: Sheer 14/0, amber
Tail: Goose biots dyed sulphur orange
Rib: (1) antique gold wire, small and (2) stripped peacock herl
Body: Wool blend (gold/burnt orange/olive) twist dubbed on thread
"Leg" hackles: Golden plover
Gills: Light grey ostrich herl

If nothing else that color combination is a winner--light gray ostrich and plover is one I haven't seen before, but it really seems perfect. I could definitely see some Spanish Needle/Watchet-like spiders coming out of this as well.

I can report live from the scene, this is not a simple fly to manage but it came off Bill's vise as easy as any other he ties. I had the distinct honor of visiting with Bill at his home yesterday, and trying my hand at this fly with less than passable results.

This fly and variations of it really could be important in anyone's box. Particularly nice material selection and the blend of wool dubbing recipe Lance shared really seems perfect for this imitation. I should have offered some sort of tuition for the course I received yesterday.
