Chamois Ear

Pronounced "Shammy". Sort of a Mountain Goat.
Introduced here in NZ many many decades ago and whilst not that common, sometimes seen when out deer stalking or fishing around various places in mountainous areas of the South Island.
Anyway. I have recently being playing around with the fur from one I shot some yrs ago and had been using some neck fur for hair hackled emerger type dries. (The fur is fine and deer like and will spin or stack in similar fashion to deer hair - more or less depending on the body area.) Then Hans showed us Moose Ear fur in action. Aha!! So I pulled out the Chamois Ears: Quite soft on the outer side and lends itself nicely to soft hair hackle.
The paler inside is also quite usable.
And a soft hair hackled fly made with the stuff - not up to Hans' standard I'm afraid.. Body of Orange Pearsall's gossamer touch dubbed with a mix of mole and muskrat fur, ribbed with fine wire. Hackle of Chamois Ear fur.
The second one is the same but using purple 8/0 Unithread. One turn of hackle too many methinks on that one but what the hell.
I am sure they'll work. (They had better as I've tied up a couple of dozen in 14 - 16! )
