The 18e of april I shall go to Wales to my son who lives there. We are going to fish 4 days on the river Afnan, the Irfon, the Wye and the Usk.

Here are the first two flies:

Usk Naylor:



Usk Naylor (var)

Hook: Kamasan B 175 #12
Thread: purple Pearsall’s Gossamer
Tail: dun saddle cock fibers
Body: brown mallard corded with a loop of the thread
Rib: copperwire
Hackle: Dun hen saddle


The Usk and purple:



Purple Usk(var)

Hook: Kamasan B 175 #12
Thread: purple Pearsall’s Gossamer
Body: thread
Thorax: Hare’s Ear
Hackle: upper coverts from a waterhen’s wing

Otherwise, Sweets is a wonderful flyshop on the Usk--I got soaked one afternoon and was well-nigh hypothermic but Ms. Williams' welshcakes saw me through.

Ruard, this sounds like a very special trip. Looking forward to seeing the rest of the arsenal you've got in mind for the trip. These are beautiful, cool pics and cool background too. I especially like the corded body in the first fly.

I do know the Hogweed or as call it: Bereklauw. My father was a gardener and on one day he came home with an arm like burned by that litle hairs of ythe leafs.

Do you have any advise for us for the Usk and the Wye?

I do this like this:
1. ty in the fibers of the mallard
2 make a loop of the thread a bit shorter than the fibers
3 with an electrical hackleplier catch the loop and the fibers and turn them

Do you have any advise for us for the Usk and the Wye?

I wish I could say I unlocked the secrets of the Usk, but I'm afraid there weren't any hatches coming off (though my host caught a nice 15-inch brown. ) Otherwise, it's a lovely river--I'd love to get to know it through the seasons.

Nice looking ties Ruard, they look like they'll do the job to me.
I'd love to see some photos of your trip, hopefully with one of your gorgeous ties buried in the scissors of a fat wild brown trout...
