Is the feather that color naturally? I've never heard of a black grouse. I'll have to look this up on Google.

It is the natural color.Is the feather that color naturally? I've never heard of a black grouse.

However, the whisky to which Hans alludes in the pattern name has the red grouse as it's logo. (Although they're apparently now marketing a "Black Grouse" version with proceeds going to grouse conservation.)
It's hard to tell which grouse the old authors were referring to when they just said "grouse". Edmonds and Lee never specified either; Pritt calls out "red grouse" in some patterns, and just "grouse" in others, so you could infer that 130 years ago the black grouse was the "regular" kind.
