The recent post by hankaye "My First SOLO Flymph..." included a remark by CM Stewart about tying in hand on the streambank in fading light. It brought a chuckle to me because I had just the day before tried tying my first fly without a vise. I love October Caddis and had just tied one on my vise for steelhead to post on another site in response to a question about Steelhead soft hackes. With the leftover dubbing I had mixed I decided on a whim to try tying the next one in hand without a vise.This is something I had meant to do for a long time but just had never gotten around to it. My apologies CM but I didn't try this at streamside in bad light but it was my first without a vise. Admittedly it was easier with a large iron instead of a normal sized flymph hook but I think it shows how versatile flymphs can be. Most people post trout sized flies on this site but the basic flymph can do many things.

Great first effort for tying in hand. I'd offer to test that fly for you, but the pineapple express has dumped a ton of rain in western WA and all of our major rivers are flooding or under flood watch. Hard to fish when your dodging trees and houses floating down stream.

That or a knot through the eye and around the shank like a figure 8 loop, double Turle, or Morrum guiding knot.

I am genuinely impressed! Lovely pattern. I'd swing that for steelhead any day, with confidence.

What hook is this tyed on? Beautiful curve to it.

It is tied on a Dai Riki 899 #4. Dai Riki is now my standard steelhead fishing hook, while tying and giving away many flies tied on my old Mustad 36890s.
