:? So enlighten me..... are Steelhead flymphs not meant to have floss bodies? Are floss bodies reserved for hairwing Steelhead flies and Atlantic patterns?
Had I have known of such mysteries I would have dubbed a body on the fly above..... it does have one wrap of orange wool and one of bronze peacock in the thorax collar..... does that help?

Thanks Karsten.
Have a few Oz connections through other sites, one a bamboo rod maker from Sydney will be here early next month to fish, another from Tassie makes some wonderful flies with Wallaby fur. Good guys to have met.

Here is the simple difference between a Flymph and a thread or other bodied Soft Hackle. The term flymph was created by "Pete" Hidy in the expanded edition of The Art of Tying the Wet Fly and Fishing the Flymph
A WINGLESS ARTIFICIAL FLY with a soft, translucent body of fur or wool which blends with the undercolor of the tying silk, utilizing soft hackle fibers easily activated by the currents to give the effect of an insect alive in the water-----.
The addition of a wing also takes it out of the wingless wet category but we delight on beautiful soft hackles as well on this site. ;)

See Pete's expanded notion that a flymph (The transition from nymph to adult or as Pete liked to call, the Fymph) is best tied with a spun body here...

OK, so does this one count? :)

It may be a little big to qualify as an insect imitation, on a #2 hook and all..... but this thread is aimed at Steelhead right?

Mataura, we put NO limitations on our dressings & or recipes, including hooks. ABSOLUTELY NONE! Case Closed. Why in the world would you want to limit your imagination. Whatever preconcieved notions you may have accidentally come up with, are merly the fault of closed minded individuals who have simply put, misinformed you. In an instance like that, it is one of the occassions when you need to know, that it is time to let something go in one ear and out the other. NEVER listen to one who tries to tell you something can only be done in a certain way, over and above all others. Opinions are like a$$holes, everybody has one.
The "Flymph" is such a diverse creation, as it's mere existance defies all restrictions by it's very nature. Leisenring and Hidy were merly the guys who blazed the trail.......fully aware of the fact that the trail would soon become a Super Expressway, complete with rest stops, service plazas, nature viewing pullouts, world record tunnels goin' right through huge mountains, and all whatever else the human "IMAGINATION" is capeable of dreamin' up................you dig?
"Stay on top of the case. Cause if you fall inside the case.....they put the lid on, and carry you off." Rahsaan Roland Kirk. BRIGHT MOMENTS!

Btw, love your flies.....& photography. ;)

Willowhead- understood, it is just we live on a by-pass..... the highway missed us.

The very idea of thying a fly without a wing here means your tying a nymph, pure and simple, we don't like to over-complicate things over here.
My main reason for asking was so that I did not tread on any toes here..... I am just the new kid on the block.
But do not fear.... I tie by no mans bible...... lack of big ole flyshop stores here lends to me tying with what I can get my hands on, so whilst I am hardly inventing the wheel here I do experiment and bend tradition a bit.

No problem Mayfly.........personally i prefere a country road myself, when and if i have the time to take. Just remember to always put the "emphasis" on the AND..........like R AND B.....(Rice AND Beans :D ), Rock AND Roll.....Country AND Western.....it's the "AND" that makes the recipe Bro. Incrediants are ingrediants.........but it's the AND (LOVE) that defines DE DIFF! Don't matter if the veggies just came outta the garden an hour ago.....if the cook don't "Get It".....i'm headin' to a joint i know, where the cook DOES get it........................you dig? ;)
