I like the look, but every time I tie one that looks like the first one, it wants to be a dry, even with hen.

Great looking flies. Do you fish them with a Tenkara outfit?

Beautiful flies!

You are exactly right, the stiff hackle doesn't collapse like a soft hackle would. It resists being pulled through the water, which allows you to keep your line tighter and off the water's surface. Very similar concept to Cutcliffe's stiff hackled wets for fishing rapid streams.

Much easier to detect strikes when fishing wet flies upstream if you can keep your line off the water!
