The Red (or Brown?) Hackle

Post by Stendalen » Mon Jan 07, 2019 1:53 pm

Was looking for a darker pattern to get in my box and skimming in my books I saw this pattern in Leisenring's and Hidy´s book. It it first on their list of favourite patterns actually, The Red Hackle. Here tied on a Kamasan B175 #12.

If you look closely on the lower fly you see how well the Crimson threads fits the hearl in terms of colour! Never seen that so well before.

Actually there is a really nice picture of Brown Hackle in one of the Swap threads here. Tried to link the image but that did not work so below is a copy

Btw: Is the Crimson version the Brown Hackle and Claret the Red Hackle?)

Excellent tying! One of my favorites.

Both versions are called Brown Hackle. The peacock version is Leisenring's and the mohair version is Hidy's.
I hate it when I think I'm buying organic vegetables, and when I get home I discover they are just regular donuts.

I've always loved this pattern. Classic!

I think this is the same fly shown in the FlymphForum logo, above.

Beautiful job, Martin. ;)

Oh yeah! Did not know. It really looks like a killer fly, will for sure try out the mohair version.

Thanks Carl & Ray.

They're also called Red Hackle, depending on where and when you're referring.

Leisenring I guess calls it The Brown or Red Hackle in ATWF (I was thinking this was only Brown as well). But, Hidy calls Leisenring's version the Brown Hackle and all his Brown Hackle as well. Probably why in ATWF its the Red or Brown Hackle. I can see them debating on what to call it. In one place I see Hidy calls for badger hackle and in another he calls for brown badger hen or golden furnace and still in another he calls for red furnace with black center and tips. Hidy's versions are not peacock though, he uses a reddish brown wool body. I know this is probably nothing you didn't know already Bob, I'm more organizing it in my head by writing it down. Personally, I wouldn't call any of them Brown or Red Hackle since they all use either badger or furnace. :D
