Last night I came across a relevant passage in What the Trout Said by Datus Proper:
Gambel's Quail: This little desert bird has some of the most attractive blue-dun body feathers imaginable, a few of them finely speckled. They are just right for hatching duns. The scaled quail also has nice blue feather, but with a small black tip. If desert quail were native to Yorkshire, there would be dozens of traditional patterns using their feathers.



I think this fly pretty much proves that point.
