hook - Dai Riki 135 #12
thread - Danville 6/0 brown
abdomen - Brassie wire copper
thorax/head - dubbing (squirrel used here; didn't do a great job cleaning out the grinder as a few stray orange fibers from previous fly got in the mix, but it goes with the copper)
collar - deer hair (guard hairs from insert your favorite animal could be used as well)

Scott, that's beautifully put together. This would make a great point fly for those winter outings. I've done well with similar designs in off season. Especially with a few unintended fibers that add to the mix. I really like your hair hackle. Nicely done all around.

For anyone interested, here's the hackling steps I used; a traditionally spun deer hair collar would work, too, but when I'm trying for something sparser, this way works for me.


clean, stack, measure (tips to bend) a small clump of deer hair; insert in clip






wax thread/create loop




trim hair butts short (makes it a lot easier to spin) insert in clip; spin








moisten fingers, stroke fibers back and wrap

Great looking fly!

Beautiful. Looks useful. Looks like it'd make a good spotted sedge emerger. Squirrel guard hairs might make a good collar on this as well. Thanks. Gave me an idea. Going to try a version with the deer hair & a lighter weight body material & fish it dressed, as a sedge cripple.
