While digging through one of my hook boxes, looking for a certain hook type for a friend, I came across an old box of Mustad 94842 in size 22. So I decided to use a couple. Here is the result:

Another, riding a Daiichi model 1110, size 22.
Thread is gold Pearsalls gossamer - (I split one piece into three strands).
Touch dubbed with baby seal.
Hackle is bleached starling.

I am always amazed when I see people tying this small. Those are beautiful, Dana. I've got the same hooks but I won't get your results.
There's a hatch on the Aroostook that these would be perfect for; smallest Mayfly I've ever seen. I tried to whittle down a #18 Griffith's Gnat one night to approximate what I was seeing but it was like throwing the Queen Mary at them.
You've infused my coffee with a shot of motivation this morning. thanks.

Very well executed Theroe.
There are tailwaters in my neck of the woods where this size pattern is the staple, year round. Your pattern would work on those tailwaters. Year round.

Thanks guys, for the words of encouragement – I don’t tie very many small patterns like this.

Terrible. You should tye a couple dozen practice flies, then send them to me for review. I will send back any that pass inspection...

Great job, Dana!
One question: what did you use to grip the starling when you wrapped it? Hackle pliers? Artery clamp? Divine intervention?

Oh, man, Dana, if only I could tie like that.
That second fly is starting to look a lot like an olive version of the black gnat patterns that my dad tied for droppers—but his were a little bigger, and didn't have tails.
