I'm hoping to stream test this on Arkansas' White River during the March/April caddis hatch................
Hook: Nymph/wet fly (Size 14 1XL)
Thread: Pearsall's Gossamer (Olive #16)
Abdomen: Hare's mask (Olive) - using split-thread method
Hackle: Partridge (1 turn)
California Quail (1 and 1/2 turns)
Head: Pearsall's - sealed with UV Cure

Nice fly , no question it will work. Have you considered a bright green tag to represent the egg laying female? When they’ve laid their eggs, usually around the margins they will drift spent, ideal for a flymph. Same fly, two options!

Very nice Ken the Fly should work fine.Would be fun swinging that on your Philopson 8 1/2 footer I saw you with back in Cotter. Check out Davy Wottons SLF caddis on u tube. Works great on the White.

I tie several peacock bodied soft hackle variations using using a wire wrapped peacock body; partridge, hen, starling, etc.hackles for some very effective fishing. Using a lime green thread for the head and butt, creates a nice egg laying caddis variation.

As has been pointed out above, that is a fine looking soft hackle, Ken. I particularly like the length and density of your hackle and it is apparent that you have seen (and practiced) split-thread dubbing previously. Hans Weilenman perhaps?

Tom - Yes, I was fishing the Phillipson DFS the day we talked at Rim Shoals 2 years ago. Hope to make it over again this year for Sowbug. I also have an 8.5' Heddon #17 with 1 3/4F that is a wonderful rod for swinging soft hackles. I will check out that Davey Wotton video. I have a wet fly he tied when he did a presentation for our TU chapter.

Tie2fish - I appreciate your comment. You're correct--I watched a video where Hans Weilenmann did a demo of the split thread technique. Do you know if he originated that technique?

Barry - I have used a pattern similar to what you suggested and Bob posted for the egg-laying caddis. In the White River area, they call it the Green Butt. I make the tag out of chartreuse wire, which is also used to rib the peacock body. I want to tie some on a nymph/wet fly hook. When I tie them on a scud hook, I miss way too many strikes, especially when the fly is hanging directly downstream. Any one have any tips for improving your hooking percentage on those downstream strikes?

Davy Wootton showed the split thread technique in Fly Fishing & Fly Tying magazine way back in a previous millenium. That was the first time I saw it. Maybe in the nineteenth century but probably in the twentieth .
