I fish a lot of small streams and the caddis fly is a staple for me. I tie the usual patterns like the elk hair, etc. But I also like to experiment with my own creations. Here is one...

Hook, any long curved caddis type #14
Thread, yellow
Body, Natural fox squirrel belly
Hackle, Bleached partridge

How did you form the body on this fly? Did you dub the thread, or did you use a dubbing loop? I like the shape and texture.

Brilliant. That would make for a great highland caddis imitation.

I dubbed the body by putting it on the thread. I left a thread tag to simulate an egg.

That fox squirrel dubbing is spikey.

That looks like a winner, Alan. I especially like the long, soft hackle; that will give the fly a lot of movement in the water. And the colors fit together very well.

Bill I know you favor longer hackles from previous conversations.

I'm going to try them out tomorrow.

Beautiful looking fly, colors fit well with the others, and yea the squirrel fur is just a bit on
the spiky side of tame. Which leads me to ask how you wrangled it into submission? It looks
so well behaved on the hook.

This certainly looks like it would serve you well. Did you get a chance to try it out?

Hank, I'm from CT...and the squirrel does what it wants most times. I use regular wax and little saliva and most times it works. Thanks


William, I did give a workout and it hit it's mark. Usually the brookies are not to picky. The fly had great movement.
