Fly boxes

Post by Silver Doctor » Fri May 01, 2009 11:12 pm

have quite a few difference boxes. I've been using the CF boxes (22-compartment 8-Row, plus the flip page smaller one) and quite like the way the flies fit in the slits. only thing the height profile of the boxes ted to squash the hackle over the season making it necessary to steam them back in shape. Tried putting em in hinged window boxes but they are not as handy as you end up digging through them and loosing the odd one to the wind finding what you want. Mind you it does give me an opportunity to clean out my boxes once a year.

Any thoughts on boxes and your favorites or ones you hate.

I carry all my flies (except for #20 and smaller) in standard Morell boxes ... all plain white and all identified with plastic labels on three sides, with a TU name/address sticker that has been covered with clear epoxy. Using both the ripple ridges and the inside of the cover, these boxes will handle in excess of 200 flies each (mostly #14-#18's). They're very light, stay closed nicely (magnets), and float if dropped in the water. Final plus for me -- they're relatively cheap to purchase (prox $ 8.50 each).

I have grown fond of the aluminum fly boxes with the small metal clips. I carry all of my classic style flies in these boxes. My father and grandfather used these types of boxes for their flies, and I just like the aesthetics better with the older style box.

For my emergers, midges and nymphs I use the CF boxes for my drys I use 16 compartment DeWitt boxes that I have had for thirty years. I also have a some small four and six section boxes that I use on occasion.

I just recently bought a used Richardson box that I will start to use soon.

Hi All;

I really like the C & F boxes but they are a little pricey. I found the following on ebay: http://cgi.ebay.com/Irideus-Hatch-Threa ... p3286.c0.m and it appears to be very similar to C & F at a fraction of the price!

I really like the slotted foam boxes for flies, they seem to hold hooks well and make it easy to see what you have.
