I'm probably not in step with the masters, but I tie tight up to the eye to form the head.

I'm with REE on this one. I tend to tye the head snug against the hook eye. It's a matter of personal preference. I just don't like the look of my flies when there is a gap between the eye of the hook and the head. If the hook eye has a significant gap where the eye meets the hook, I will intentionally crowd the head so the tying thread covers the gap. I do this to prevent the tippet from getting caught in the hook eye when using an open loop knot.

I use a hook with a straight eye, so the head area will be just behind the eye.
