Allen McGee's Book

Post by DNicolson » Tue Oct 19, 2010 2:54 am

When I had my last serious eye attack, I had just received a copy of
Allen McGee's book - "Tying & Fishing Soft-Hackle Nymphs", and I have
only just been, recently, able to read it.
Probably to the converted, an excellent book, I have been given lots of
great ideas, and a good incentive to get tying again.

Allen's book is very good. I spent some time speaking with Allen in 08. You can tell that Allen knows his stuff and he is an excellent and prolific fly tier. He shared some of his flies with me. Also, I could sense a very inquisitive nature and highly attuned powers of observation while speaking with him. These make a good fly fisherman for sure.

Seems I bought the right book! Got McGee's book a week ago together with two of Nemes books. Reading Hughes book now and have only flipped through the others. They all look great.

Since you have those you might as well start looking for both of Roger Fogg's books along with Wooley's and W.C. Stewart and T.E. Pritt and last but far from least Edmund and Lee's. That should give a start. :D

McGee's book has some good info in it.

You're off to a great collection Martin. Happy reading!

Hi All;

I met Allen at the IFTS last year, purchased an autographed copy of his book from him. I must have talked/watched him tie for over an hour whilst others just passed him by. He was very friendly, willing to share his knowledge and demonstrated many techniques for me. He definetly knows a thing or two about soft hackles, seemed wiser than he looked in age.

The color tying illustratiions with recipies in his book are quite good. Also, he describes and provides step by step photos of three different ways to hackle a soft hackle. Over all, I find his book a wealth of information and well worth the purchase price.

I would say don't forget Leslie Magee, Mike Harding and John Reid (Clyde Style Flies) and last but not least Mr E.M.Tod :D

Always fun to find out about a new tyer you weren't aware of.....although i may have seen the guy at a show somewhere and just forgot.....if so, i apoligise. i went and saw his work at Hans site.....VERY VERY nice stuff.
Took a look at my page there and fell out laughing.............the flies are from at least 5 yrs. ago and i was on a PB kick, so they all have PB in the wings........lmao........... :lol: :oops: :roll: http://www.danica.com/flytier/mromero/mromero.htm
i should of sent him more flies for an update long ago.....but my flies (being very three-deminsional), are VERY hard (difficult), and or expensive to ship if they're going to be kept in good shape in route.....oh well. We should all be very greatfull to Hans for maintaing such an amazing site. ;)
