Playing with some Magpie Materials

A while back Stephen Hankins, owner, operator, shipping clerk, dye master, etc, of Magpie Materials was kind enough to send me some stuff to play with. Most was Kimono silk on standard tying spools, and we have sung the praises of Kimono for ever. There were a couple things new to me, at least. His 72 denier thread and some of his Australian Possum dubbing. The thread is a polyester. It has just a bit of stretch, lays flat or cords up nicely and has a rather pleasing matte finish to it. It takes tying or cobbler's wax well. His Australian Possum dubbing is very nice, it dubs on the thread nicely as a noodle and touch dubbed. I tried to wash the color out of some of the dyed dubbing and nothing changed. Good stuff. Here's what I came up with, just playing around.

Hook: Mustad 3906B size 12, Thread: Magpie Materials polyester 72d in a yellowish orange, Tag and Rib: UTC Pearl Tinsel size small, Body: Magpie Materials Australian Possum dyed dun, Hackle: Melanistic Ringneck Hen neck feather.

Gorgeous tie, Ron. That fly will do great work on the upper Aroostook; Munsungan and Millinocket streams.
