Just noticed an excellent post by Joaniebo on the Red Hot Spot black Magic Spider. Here is another spider very simple to tie but lethal. Basically it’s a ‘William’s Favourite’ with a red wool tail.

The dressing :-
Black thread
Black hen hackle
Red wool tail with body of thread ribbed with fine silver wire.
I tie in sizes 14/16/18

Beautiful dressing. Immaculately done.

I agree with what Ray said. Very clean dressing.

Awhile back, I posted this pic (and the dressing from the sourced book) and I still think that the name "Bloody William's Other Mate" is one of the weirdest named fly dressings. I'd love to learn why / how it got named!

Your post about ‘Bloody Williams other mate’ has shaken a few of my brain cells.
In 1967/9 I was involved with the Fly Dressers Guild and recall Jim Nice’s patterns being discussed at a meeting. That was when I became aware of the ‘Bloody William’ which was one of Jim Nice’s patterns. The ‘Bloody Williams Other Mate’ was a variation of the ‘Bloody William’.
I do recall the first fish I caught on the Bloody William was a 2lb 8oz brown trout from Sutton Bingham Reservoir. It was a monster in those days and my largest trout at the time. Happy Days. A few flies have been tied since then.

Reminds me of the Black Pennell which is another great fly.

Doug made me wonder about something when he commented on being dressed in black with a red tail.
Just the dressed in black part makes me wonder why no one has come up with a fly named, Cash. I swear Johnny Cash is more popular today than he was yesteryear.
