Re: Bobbin Holder for Pearsall's Bobbins
While waiting, patiently, for the Wasatch to arrive, I tried modifying a poor bobbin holder I received in a portable tying kit.
Even after pulling the limbs as much as I felt comfortable with, it still wasn't tight enough for me to be comfortable tying with it.
I'm going to see if I can find some golf tees to jury rig something that will work. Not that I need it, but just because.

Its OK, Hank. The tees are from a jump-the-peg game I bought for the kids from Cracker Barrel. (The kids are from Cracker Barrel, not the game......)

John Shaner (Greenwell) found in his collection a few rare original bobbins.
"These are the original bobbins made for the Pearsalls spools and they were made and sold by Veniard. I bought one when i was a kid but found these a few years ago. The thread goes through two tiny holes in the looped part. They actually work very well!"
Very cool to see these. Thanks, John.

That's pretty wild. probably made tying "in hand" seem like the easier option.
You would either have to have a lot of thread out, or rotate the bobbin holder as you went around the fly.
I received my Wasatch from Jim's place Monday, and have made a few practice flies. They're going to have to get better.
I'll have more time to play with them this weekend.

Sometimes even the inexpensive Made in India bobbins are suitable for silk especially after a little treatment with very fine wet/dry sandpaper.
