up turned eyed hooks

Post by Lonewolve » Tue May 11, 2010 7:32 pm

Hi Flymphers,
I don't know if it is just me but i love the way my soft hackles and especially my flymphs look tied on Mustad 94842 in sizes #12, and #14. can't wait to figure out how to post pics here then i can share my flies. When tied on these hooks the flies remind me of the larger salmon hooks.Just wished there were these hooks in a heavier wire, sometimes the darn takes are so hard the trout straighten out the hooks or from fighting them, anyway i love this style hook and will probabaly have to buy mine next slew from bearsden since i can't find anyone else that stocks em,also i hate buying hooks by the 50 count,i much prefer buying 100 packs, darn hook people grrrrrrr. Any way thats my 1 cent worth .

Hi Rick,
You are not alone. Many tiers like up eye hooks for flymphs. Vern Hidy preferred them as well for flymphs and suggested the Mustad 94842 for tying them. Many years ago Mustad made an up eye wet fly hook that, for some reason, they do not manufacture any longer. Probably no big market for them. Gaelic Supreme offers a beauty of an up eye wet fly hook, but they are bit pricey.

I admit that I'm one of those that likes the up turned eye on my flymph hooks. The Gaelic Supreme hook looks very nice. I may have to try a few of those.

Hi Rick, I am one of those fond of the up eye hook. The 94842 is a great little hook that I like for sparse thin North Country spider patterns. But for my flymphs I prefer a little stouter hook. Here is a link to that I think you will find enjoyable to browse through.

There are 2 pages at this link so make sure not to miss the second page. Also, for further browsing just select the Mustad Hooks link on the top left of the page. Really like the Gealic Supreme hooks as well.
