Step by Step photos of tying "Hair Soft Hackles"

Post by Ted Andersen » Wed May 06, 2009 12:15 pm

Hello,

I'm a new member to the board (was away for awhile from the boards . . . but its fantastic to discover that this one has arrived!!), and so this may have been gone over alot already . . . but I can't seem to find it anywhere. Apologies if I am being redundant.

Are there any step-by-step tying sequential photos out of there of getting Hair onto a hook in a soft-hackle manner? I guess its what you are doing in your present swap,as well as what tyers like Hans is using in patterns like the "Flame" with the Pine Squirrel hair.

Is it simply a matter of distribution-wrapping-spinning the hair? (something I've never been so elegant at . . . )?

Thanks--(And great to discover this board!)---Ted

Both Mike C. and Hans have posted links to hackleing with hair here. If I knew how to link it for you I would.
Go to the thread on the swap.

Narcodog--

Thank you. I can find the Mike-steps, but where do I go for the Hans steps? (couldn't find any such links on the swap thread)?

Thanks--Ted

Ted,

Lot of useful info already provided above, in form of text and links.

I am familiar with three basic approaches.

1. Tips tied in facing forward over the eye
2. Tips tied in facing over the body
3. Split thread or thread loop

A number of minor variations are available within these broad categories.

I am sure you will discover them as you try the approaches, to settle on the approach or approaches which work best for you. Please note that different structure of hair may work best with one approach over another, plus the pattern look&feel may steer you to one approach, or another.

Cheers,
Hans W

That is an interesting tutorial by Sandy Pittendrigh. Thanks for posting it. That's a neat method of keeping the bead tight and hackling at the same time.

All the information provided above about performing this style of tying is excellent and I just want to say, thank you one and all. These are great "killing" type flies that can work all over the world.
