Has anyone used this slinky indicator made with Rio 2-tone tippet material?

I had not seen the Rio 2 tone indicator material before but made some slinkies in 2008 after fishing with a friend and Bret Bishop a Teacher (and Guide) from Boise, ID who was on the US Fly Fishing Team. He showed me the technique on the Big Wood River. He was introduced to them in Portugal by the French fishing team but thought they may have originated with the Spanish flyfishers.

I made mine from Fluorescent mono and carry some in my vests. I had used a short section of straight Amnesia as a sighter for several years before but the stretch in the slinky spring is even easier to detect. The Rio material is now on my list of toys to get.

I have not used the two tone material. Detecting a solid color slinky is not that tough.

I used it last season after seeing the vid and purchasing some of the 2 tone. Easy enough to make. Tried a few various sized nails and found A spiral that seemed the best size for me visually and was quite visible even in twilight. Used it with upstream wets and soft hackles and unweighted nymphs and it did the job. Picked up a few very soft takes as it’s quite sensitive...

George Daniel in his book "Dynamic Nymphing: Tactics, Techniques, and Flies from Around the World"
mentioned the slinky indicator but I'm thinking he referred to them as from Czechoslovakia. May be
wrong won't be the first time nor the last.

With 20ft leaders and no fly line out the rod tip how can this be called fly fishing? Ted Fay and his Bomber Fly’s of the seventies used this method and back then it was called “high sticking “. A lot of fly fishermen back then also dismissed it as “not fly fishing”. Dynamite also catches lots of fish as well as m-80’s, would you call that fishing if you attached a fly to every stick?

If you insist on casting (in the modern sense of the word) as being part of fly fishing, then you've excluded about 90% of the rich history of the sport. What Claudius Aelianus described seeing in Macedonia c 150 AD couldn't be called fly fishing. Dame Juliana (or at least the author of The Treatyse), Charles Cotton, Robert Venables, James Chetham and Richard Bowlker, couldn't be called fly fishers. It's the terminal tackle that should define fly fishing, not the method of placing it in the water.

BTW, as a kid I did occasionally "fish" with M-80's. I found flies to be more effective and less likely to attract the attention of the warden.

Hey Ken, I can’t tell you accurately the diameter but it’s a 6 inch nail. I have no idea if yours are same diameter as ours...
