First Time Out

Due to medical problems, haven't been able to get to a trout stream this season - until this past Wednesday afternoon. My wife and I had to visit an Orivs store to get a Barbour jacket repaired, so we stopped at a nearby trout stream and I swung a few soft hackles for a short while. On second cast had a nice hit (and miss)... stayed within 20 feet of the same spot for awhile and had a couple more hits and then caught two decent Browns on a Hare's Ear soft hackle. Doc gave approval yesterday, so in a couple weeks, will be swing soft hackles on Michigan's Au Sable's waters.

I'm to hear your doctor gave you clearance to fish again, and you were able to get out recently. Bet it felt good swinging flies again.

Good luck on your upcoming trip. Please tell us about it when you get back. I'd love to see some pictures, it you take a camera along. Let me know if you need help posting them. I'd be happy to help.

New to the forum and soft hackles, I'm hooked. Been lurking and reading threads for quite a while. My ears perked up when you said you were gonna be fishing the AuSable. I love fishing the AuSable. Been staying on the North Branch for the past few years. Good luck on your trip.

Welcome MIflyguy, glad to see another Michigan guy on the board. I mainly fish the upper manistee and it's tributaries but have fished a bit on the Ausable North Branch. I have heard of lower numbers of trout there recently. Have you experienced this? A friend of mine has a cabin there and he confirmed it as well.

Dave

SenecaLaker ~

I really can't confirm the lower numbers on the AuSable yes or no. I have be doing pretty good this year, however, the largest fish I have caught this year was an 11" brook. The last couple of times I went out I caught over 20 per day. But, the largest were about 8". So, I can confirm that the size of the fish are smaller, that was at Dam 4.

I was using a Trico and a Green Partridge. I plan to be going up again this weekend and staying through Labor Day. I hope to get on the river a couple of days. Trico hatch should still be going.
