GARY,
THE NICE THING ABOUT THIS FORUM IS DUMMIES LIKE ME GET TO ASK QUESTIONS. "MANIPULATION"? THE SMART SIDE OF MY BRAIN WANTS TO SAY IT HAS TO DO WITH THE WAY A FLY IS RETRIEVED SUCH AS A FLY BROUGHT THRU THE CURRENT "ON THE SWING". THE DUMB SIDE......WELL, LET'S NOT ENTER THAT PART OF THE UNIVERSE.
AM I RIGHT? MAYBE YOU CAN EDUCATE ME!
FROM THE DEN,
DOUGSDEN

Hi Dougsen.

What I mean is
Imparting some additional movement to the flies my manipulation from the rod tip or line hand.
So the flies represent better not only the size and general shape of the natural.
But also the best we can the general action of the natural underwater or in the process of hatching.

My books with reference to manipulation are limited to

Brook and river trouting. Edmonds and lee
Fly fishing Viscount grey
Small river fishing James Evans
In search of wild trout. Nicholas fittion (Fantastic book)
Practical angler WC stewart (Negative responce )
Fishing ways and wiles Major moritt
Halcyon: Or, Rod-fishing with Fly, Minnow, and Worm Henry Wade
Not wet flies but sawyer and kite were also very favourable of imparting movement with the induced take method

The Czech and French also at times impart additional movement to the drifting flies.

Anyone else have any more info

Gary

Guys,
About a year ago I got a book by Rich Ostoff. The tile was "Active Nymphing - Aggressive Strategies for casting, rigging and moving nymphs". I found it a great book and some of the techniques lend themselves really well to soft hackles.

rock or jiggle the rod slightly while using the hand twist retrieve. As the fly gets closer, raise the rod tip slowly to simulate a hatching fly.
