A reasonable fish of around 2 3/4 lbs - just over 18 inches that fell to a Spur Winged Plover soft hackle today.
There was a brief hatch of around 15 minutes and she gave a very good account of herself in here:
A little under average for this river.

I'm green with envy. You post borders on cruelty (just kidding of course), as I haven't been able to fish for months due to the creeks being frozen. Fortunately the creeks recently let loose all the ice, so it is time to get some stream time.
Congratulations on your wonderful catch and fishing location! That is a beautiful fish.

Sweet fish Johnno, that looks a lot like my home town area... minus the big fish. Fantastic.
Is that a Brown Trout? The spots seem to be rather blotchy compared to what I am used to seeing.

It's a Brown RnF, all there are in this system, in fact there are only very a few rivers in the top of the South Island with 'bows. (Dare I say it; I sometimes get sick of browns and hanker for a few dumb rainbows now and again...)
REE, The fly was a purple thread, touch dubbed with mole fur and a silver rib with a hackle of the covert of a spur winged plover - a local bird. The hackle is a blue - grey colour and Snipe or even that greyish French Partridge would easily substitute. Size 16 for the local mayfly population. I'll post a pic of one when I next do a macro session...
Here is another view of the river yesterday:
